After School Programs

Programs run from 3:30 PM to 4:45 PM daily.

G.Y.M. after school programs take place at three locations (mâmawêyatitân centre, Core Ritchie and Glencairn neighbourhood centres). Youth are engaged in various experiences that enhance social, emotional and physical well-being. Our G.Y.M. facilitation teams ensure all youth are included and feel a sense of success. This program is more than simply getting youth active after school. Movement and wellness are evident in the experiential opportunities we create, however the over arching goal of the program is to develop 21st Century living skills.

We believe to achieve these living skills, youth need opportunities to further develop Personal and Social Responsibility. G.Y.M. programming follow the Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR) teaching model (Hellison, 2011). Hellison’s teaching model focuses on developing high levels of responsibility through physical activity and movement opportunities. TPSR is a well-established instructional model that has been acknowledged as an exemplary approach to stimulating responsibility through physical education and after school youth programs (Metzler, 2005).

G.Y.M. programming is intergenerational. We believe youth development takes a team approach. G.Y.M. is equally important to the younger youth as it is to the Indigenous mentors, the volunteer university students, and the site facilitators and our connected First Nation Elders. All participants of G.Y.M. programming have a voice and are provided the opportunity to share. Participants also share through self-reflection. After each experience, our site facilitation team tracks responsibility levels of the youth around areas such as elf-control, self-direction, and compassion. Our staff also complete a weekly self-evaluation.

I understand that Growing Young Movers After School Program is programming that includes physical activity in the form of a variety of sports and recreational activities. I agree that Growing Young Movers Youth Development Inc. (G.Y.M.) assumes no responsibility and will not be held liable for any injury to my child, or loss or damage of my child’s personal property. Participation in G.Y.M. has risks and hazards including risks associated with the novel coronavirus and COVID-19. I freely and voluntarily assume all the risks and hazards of participation in G.Y.M., including any legal risks. In consideration of my child being allowed to participate in this programming, I, the parent/guardian of the child, on my own behalf and on behalf of my child, waive all present and future claims against G.Y.M, After School Program, G.Y.M. Youth Development Inc., employees, representatives, insurers and agents and their respective successors and assigns (collectively, the “Releasees”) and hereby release the Releasees from and against all liabilities, claims, actions, demands, costs and expenses relating to injury, illness, death, loss, damage to person or property or loss of property, foreseen or unforeseen, howsoever caused (including negligence of any one or more of the Releasees), arising out of or in connection with my child’s participation in the after school program. I, on my own behalf and on behalf of my child, also agree to indemnify the Releasees for, on account of or by reason of any claim advanced against any of them, or any loss or damage sustained by them, arising out of my child’s participation in Growing Young Movers After School programming.

I give my permission to G.Y.M. Youth Development Inc. to use indefinitely, without limitation or obligation, photographs, film, footage, or tape recordings, which may include my minor children’s image or voice for purposes of promoting G.Y.M. programs.

I have read and understood the terms of this agreement and by allowing my child(ren) to participate in the After School Program, I am voluntarily agreeing to abide to these terms.

This RELEASE OF LIABILITY, WAIVER OF CLAIMS INCLUDING CLAIMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE NOVEL CORONAVIRUS AND COVID-19, ASSUMPTION OF RISK and INDEMNITY is binding on myself, my heirs, my executors, administrators, personal representatives and assigns. I acknowledge the waiver set forth above.
