My name is Shanika Tait and I'm 16 years old. I am from the community of Gitlaxt’aamiks, which is also known as New Aiyansh, BC. I come from the Ganada tribe (frog).
My interests include playing soccer and basketball. I really enjoy hanging out at the Rec Centre with friends and playing rec ball. Also I like traditional dancing and singing.
Wellness is important to me because when people are well they are also happy. For me, wellness is hanging out with friends and family and having a good laugh. Also, spending time at the gym and going for runs and kicking around at the field makes me feel well. I just recently moved home from Prince George and have been spending more time exploring the Nass valley and I love it. Learning more about Nisga'a culture through traditional song and dance makes me feel good; it's a lot of fun.
The G.Y.M. program was important for our community because not only did it have a positive impact on the kids who participated in it, but all of us youth mentors. It left a positive impact on the kids who participated because every single one of those kids felt included and all got to have a good time and feel successful. I think for the youth mentors, it made us feel proud to help the youth. There was a lot of positive energy. The small kids here need to know the importance of exercising and working together and the G.Y.M. Program included all of that. It helped us as mentors realize how much the little kids look up to us and how important it is for us to be good role models. Hopefully one day they get to do what we did this week.
Wise words for youth: go out and get involved in the events around your community and stay active and keep a positive mind.
